Our story

One family, one river, plenty of time.

Mama Leuah Guesthouse & Restaurant

What began as a small kitchen with a wok and a few tables is today the Mama Leuah Guesthouse & Restaurant on Don Det — right on the Mekong, in the middle of Laos' famous 4000 Islands. Since 2001 we have been hosting guests with the same philosophy as friends: good food, good beds, honest prices and time for a chat.

Our house is run by Lutz from Germany and his wife Pheng, a daughter of the family. Together they shape the German-Lao hospitality that defines our kitchen as much as the way we treat our guests: easy-going, warm and reliable. Our guesthouse is proudly named after our family matriarch — Mama Leuah.

Fresh breeze on the banks of the Mekong

In 2025 and 2026 we completely rebuilt and modernised our seven stylish bungalows. They combine modern comfort with the relaxed charm of island life:

  • Air conditioning, comfortable beds, mosquito nets and private bathrooms
  • Own veranda with hammock and a dream view of the Mekong
  • Prices between 30 and 76 USD per night depending on the season

Our guesthouse on Don Det lies on the quiet east bank, around 500 metres south of the historic loading ramp. Away from the hustle and bustle, it is the ideal starting point for Don Det activities such as cycling, kayaking or simply unwinding.
