Getting there & Visas
The nearest international airport is in Pakse, around 150 km away. From there you reach Ban Nakasang in air-conditioned minivans (about 2.5 hours) or, slightly more adventurous, by songthaew. In Ban Nakasang, an organised ferry takes you across to Don Det. From the northern pier (Ban Hua Det), follow the path along the east bank for about 2 km southwards; after the old French loading ramp, turn left onto the riverside path – after about 10 minutes you reach us. With luggage, a tuk-tuk at the pier is recommended.
Most nationalities receive a visa on arrival for 30 days at the international airports and at most border crossings (passport valid for at least another 6 months, 2 passport photos, currently 40 US dollars for German, Austrian and Swiss nationals – ideally brought in exact US dollars). An e-visa is also possible, but is not accepted at all border crossings. When entering or leaving via the international airports or the Nong Khai–Vientiane crossing, the digital entry form (LDIF) must be completed online in advance and the QR code shown at the checkpoint. Please note: information provided without guarantee; for current details consult your foreign ministry or the responsible Lao embassy.
Yes – at some border crossings, especially towards Cambodia, self-appointed “guides” collect passports and money on the bus and demand clearly excessive visa fees (50–55 instead of 40 US dollars). We recommend handling the visa formalities yourself, directly at the counter.
Money & Banking
No, there is still no bank or ATM on Don Det. Ban Nakasang on the mainland has two ATMs. We recommend bringing enough cash from Pakse.
Yes, at various money changers, restaurants, guesthouses and travel agencies on Don Det you can exchange euros, US dollars and Thai baht into Lao Kip at locally common rates; for a fee of 5–6 %, you can also receive cash by credit card and with your passport.
Visa and Mastercard are accepted at all banks and ATMs. Cards with the V-Pay logo do not work in Asia, and even with Maestro cards there are problems at most banks and ATMs in Laos.
Health & Safety
Yes, travel health insurance for the trip is strongly recommended.
The healthcare system in Laos, especially in rural areas, is still basic. For serious medical care, a clinic in Pakse (International Polyklinik) is recommended, or in more severe cases a hospital in Thailand (e.g. Ubon Ratchathani), which offers a very good standard. In Ban Nakasang, several private doctors provide basic medical care.
Malaria and dengue are transmitted by mosquitoes; the risk is higher in the rainy season. Sleep under the mosquito net and, if needed, use anti-mosquito spray in the mornings and evenings. Continuous malaria prophylaxis is not recommended; a stand-by medication can be sensible.
These occur occasionally and are not necessarily caused by food (sun, dehydration or a virus can also be the cause). Drink enough fluids and electrolytes, then start with bland food (bananas, rice, boiled eggs). For stronger symptoms or fever, a visit to the pharmacy or doctor is recommended.
